1 Match the rules

We use have to and must when we talk about obligation and necessity.
1. Don’t have to is used to say that it is not necessary to do something.
2. Mustn’t is used to say that something is not permitted.
3. To describe obligation in the past we use had to. For absence of obligation we use didn’t have to.
4. We use will have to + infinitive for future forms, and have had to + infinitive for perfect forms.
5. We use should and ought to for mild obligation or to give advice.

a) I had to get up at 5 am to catch a plane to London yesterday.
b) You don’t have to be a member to use this sports facility.
c) You mustn’t smoke in a petrol station.
d) You should use the dictionary more often.
e) You’ll have to work harder if you want to pass the exam.

2. Study the examples and complete the rules.

You needn’t water the garden. It’s going to rain. She didn’t need to get a visa to travel to the UK.
You needn’t have bought the CD. I was going to download it for you.

needn’t have,       needn’t ,   didn’t need to

1. We use __________ and don’t need to to say that something is not necessary and that we don’t have to do it.
2. We use + infinitive to say that something was not necessary.
3. We use __________ + past participle to say that we did something although it was not necessary.
